Future Leaders

20 TY students are taking part in the Future Leaders Programme for the duration of the year. The Future Leaders Transition Year Programme is a joint initiative from the GAA and the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). It is a cross-curricular programme comprising of a series of modules designed to encourage maturity, initiative, responsibility, and leadership skills in pupils. The Programme gives pupils the knowledge and skills to support all roles required in the effective staging of Gaelic Games. As part of the Programme students are challenged to organise and run both on-field and off-field events for younger students.

Our TY future leaders have been able to implement the theory into practice by working alongside the PE Department, coaching and assisting in Matches. Over the coming few weeks and months students will also be involved in a number of skill coaching sessions with students from local primary schools. They will also be involved in assisting and leading PE lessons to Junior classes in the school. This is a wonderful opportunity for these students to develop a host of skills.

TY Future Leaders NFL Blitz

Our TY Future Leaders put the skills and qualities they learnt throughout their Future Leaders Journey to work this week as they organised a TY NFL Blitz.
NFL has been a hot topic in school in recent months with a growing interest in the NFL combine which Monaghan Goalkeeper Rory Beggan took part in. This sparked our Future Leaders to delve into the NFL world. They spent time in PE class learning the rules, practising their kicking, throwing and many more skills involved in this sport. They then used skills they learnt from their event management module and organised their own TY NFL Blitz. They made their own teams, developed fixtures, organised referees and officials, sorted pitches and equipment, made goodie bags and refreshments to name only a few.
A hugely successful blitz took place in school with the TY Future Leaders Class taking full control of the running, logistics and organising of the event. It was a hugely enjoyable day. As you can see from the video the students have developed into fine NFL players, we are hopeful some of them will follow in Rory Beggans footsteps and take part in the combine someday........ we wait in hope ?
